In its working, it is used as a variable resistor that manually controls the voltage division. Internally it comprises of a resistive element, usually a wire wound up or a conductive plastic track and a wiper or contact that slides over this track. The position of the contact on the resistive element can be changed by rotating a shaft or moving a slider connected to the wiper of the user.
